Summary
From Senator Al Franken - #1 bestselling author and beloved SNL alum -- comes the story of an award-winning comedian who decided to run for office and then discovered why award-winning comedians tend not to do that.

'Flips the classic born-in-a-shack rise to political office tale on its head. I skipped meals to read this book - also unusual - because every page was funny. It made me deliriously happy.' -- Louise Erdrich, The New York Times This is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it. It's a book about our deeply polarized, frequently depressing, occasionally inspiring political culture, written from inside the belly of the beast. In this candid personal memoir, the honorable gentleman from Minnesota takes his army of loyal fans along with him from Saturday Night Live to the campaign trail, inside the halls of Congress, and behind the scenes of some of the most dramatic and/or hilarious moments of his new career in politics. Has Al Franken become a true Giant of the Senate? Franken asks readers to decide for themselves.

Wonderful listen with great insight into Washington’s dark corners. Too polarizing and partisan at times.

Al Franken, Giant of the USA! I've always been a big fan of Al Franken, from the time i first became aware of him through Franken and Davis, and SNL. After SNL, he blossomed into an incisive political writer, with books like "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot" and "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them," just two of his efforts. In "Giant", Alan Stuart Franken chronicles his odyssey from comedian, comedy writer, movie and TV producer, and progressive radio host, to running for, and winning, a seat in the United States Senate, representing his beloved people from his beloved state of Minnesota. This book is riotously funny, but it is so much more. Listening to Franken read his book, one feels one is in a personal conversation with Al. I know that if by some good fortune, i were to run into Al by chance, i know i would not be all star-struck (i'm quite a bashful guy). It'd be like meeting up with an old friend. And i learned a lot about Al Franken. He is a thoughtful, kind, highly intelligent and knowledgeable, Patriot. He loves his wife and family, his home state of Minnesota, and the good old U. S. of A. By listening to his book, you can really get a good feel for the man. And here is one man i hope to see back in politics, ASAP, because we really need, in these dark times, as many people like Al Franken fighting the good fight with all they've got. And finally, i am so glad i got to listen to this book! It's long (about 12 hours), but i never wanted it to end. If you are interested at all in getting to know one great American, listen to this book!

I didn't know much about Al Franken before reading this book other than that he used to be on SNL and is now a senator, and I'm not a big fan of political books, so I wasn't sure I would enjoy this, but I really did. It's the kind of book I couldn't stop listening to once I started. His narration is top notch and the book offers a really fascinating behind the scenes look at running for the Senate and being a senator.

As a lobbyist for a public interest group who has been around for decades, this is one of the most honest stories about the Senate -- the importance of staff, the incredible time required for fundraising and the difficulties of getting a lot done in these times of great division. Because of Senator Franken's great comic timing, this is an especially good book to listen to the audio version.

I truly enjoyed listening to this book. I meant to listen to it on rides to our country place over many trips but I couldn't wait! I enjoyed Senator Franken's narration so much that I ordered another one of his books. Wish we had more politicians like him! Funny and honest - I learned a lot about government and feel inspired to get active in my community. Thanks Senator!

Insightful. Honest and humorous. Senator Franken has opened a glimpse into the personalities that are leading this nation.

While Sen. Franken is a gifted and witty writer, he sometimes displays intolerance towards anyone who dares to disagree or have a differing point of view. That leads this reader to wonder if his time would be better spent looking for common ground and compromise rather than personality bashing.
