***NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE DIRECTED BY STEVEN SPIELBERG***

A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready?

It's the year 2044, and the real world has become an ugly place. We're out of oil. We've wrecked the climate. Famine, poverty, and disease are widespread.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be, where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets. And like most of humanity, Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this alternate reality: OASIS founder James Halliday, who dies with no heir, has promised that control of the OASIS - and his massive fortune - will go to the person who can solve the riddles he has left scattered throughout his creation.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that the riddles are based in the culture of the late twentieth century. And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle.

Suddenly, he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions - and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed.

I really enjoyed this book. A fun and exciting tale, made more enjoyable by the excellent narration by Wil Wheaton (the perfect choice). So much better than the movie. Great geeky 1980s nostalgia!

Stumbled across this. It sucked me in and spat me out 15 hours later. What a tale! Wil Wheaton was a perfect match for this book. Now one of my top sci-fi novels ever, can't recommend enough. Get it you won't regret it.

Great book. One of my favourites. Will wheatons voice gets annoying though but apart from that he did a great job narrating.

I read ( and have now had read to me ) this book several times after seeing the movie first. Whilst I like the film I adore the book. Much darker and dystopian with real consequences. If I was a billionaire I would pay Wil Wheaton to read every single book to me. He is a joy to listen to whether sat at home relaxing or in the car. Cannot reccomend this enough.

The book is brilliant, having watched and enjoyed the film I thought this would be a good listen. But this far surpasses the film, much better plot and story line. The narrator is also very good, not too over the top with his variation of voices and is a fun one to listen to.

It's not the first time I read ths book but I needed a refresher. The audio was a bit softer than I would have preferred but the narration was fun and animated, and gave the exact right vibe for a one person reading. Made me fall in love with this book again.

Loved it ! Gives you a glimpse of what awaits us with the Metaverse. Loved the 80s pop culture! Makes it more relatable to me being born in that era . I have a long list of movies to watch and a new 80s playlist ! The narration was amazing! I felt like i was popping in a movie every time I would start listening, picking up where I dropped off ! You can feel the suspense and action happening from the narrators tone. I loved the last sentence of the book.

I first saw the film that was adapted from the book together with my won, and was interested in reading the book also. The nice thing is that the book and the film complement each other, in other words, the film is not a moment to moment rendering of the book, but it still is true to the basic idea of the book. I just noticed a tiny mistake in the book. According to the author, the protagonist gets a tiny hubbyhole measuring 10 meters on the sides. Except that a room that measures 10 meters on the side is a 100 square meter room, or if you will almost 1,000 square feet. Does not quite sound like a tiny flat to me. (I am currently living in a 3 room 98 square meter flat in Norway, and it's not tiny.) But except for this minor miss, it was a very nice read.

I thought the narrator’s voice was going to be irritating but he really suited the storyline and managed the characters really well. Amazing story that hooks you in. I couldn’t turn it off.

Really enjoyable - loved the surprisingly funny 80's culture references and genuine characters. I personally dislike all computer games; but the gaming descriptions throughout didn't detract as much as I thought they could have. Can definitely understand why it was made into a movie - universally appealing. GEEKS rejoice!

Fabulous. Thank fully listened to this novel on my walks. This meant that during the frustrating bits involving devious corporate cheating I would furiously walk faster and I was glad of the movement otherwise I'm not sure how I would have handled being on the edge of my seat listening. The narrator sounded a little like George Clooney. Looking forward to his other novel.

Best sci-fi/fiction book I've listened to in a long long time and I'm crazy excited for the Spielberg film coming out!! After I finished this I ended up watching old 80's films like blade runner and back to the future - Will Wheaton narrating was the icing on the cake - 2nd to whoever narrated Harry Potter in my eyes...

This is now one of my favourite stories. People who haven't read it, but who have heard about it will tell you it's "just a collection of 80s references". Well, yeah... if you just calmly put aside one of the most engaging, exciting, and vibrant modern stories ever written; and you know, just politely ignore the fact that the 80s references are a minority of the overall book, and oh yeah, cast a blind eye to the fact that the references that are explained in depth, are explained in an interesting and entertaining way, deeply satisfying your curiosity in how the main character will overcome his challenges. Pacing is perfect. The twists and turns are perfect. Wil Wheaton nailed it. If you're even slightly interested in sci-fi/technology themes, don't miss out on this book.

This is such an awesome book! In my opinion Wil Wheaton read it perfectly and it just added to how good the book was. Loved it!

Even better than I expected! I was worried the book would completely rely on the nostalgia factor and while it is a bit heavy handed at times, I found the overall narrative to be enjoyable throughout. I enjoy video games and some old tv series quite a bit, but I missed probably half the references in here which it turned out didn't really matter. The story didn't rely on you to know or be totally invested in its references to this world. Having a general understanding and appreciation for them was more than enough to make this a relatable and enjoyable read through. It's also one of the first gaming related novels that didn't go for the easy "you die in the game you die for real" plot point that is beginning to feel overused. Even without that they made the stakes feel important. Will Wheaton also did a fantastic job narrating!

This is a brilliant book. I really got into the story-line. If you like classic games and adventure this is well worth the download.

Being a child of the eighties and a gaming fan I maybe a little bias but oh well, this book is probably... No definitely my book of all time!. All throughout the book I was waiting patiently for the next reference to an old game or a snippet of a favorite childhood movie, television show or song just so I can giggle like a little school girl I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone even if the eighties era means nothing to you! It was even narrated by Gordie Lachance for crying out loud (Wil Wheaton's character from Stand by me... just in case you know) BRILLIANT

I really got lost in this one! if you have any sort of appreciation for classic video games or if you love alternate reality stories give this a try. Highly suspenseful! Wil Wheaton is a great narrator too, does a few voices along the way but for the most part stays out of the way of the story.
